One technique for which director Peter Mettler is known, and that he employed in End of Time, is his improvisational “image mixing,” described on his site as “using raw material from [his 2002 film Gambling, Gods and LSD] and from virtually unlimited other sources to create mixes of image and sound via live improvisation. This ‘instant’ editing system often produces surprising new narrative or lyric constructions and associations, freeing the images from their original contexts.”

He spontaneously edits a variety of digital and analog sources, cutting and superimposing them in response to the sounds created by a musician or DJ. This dialogue creates a ‘live cinema’ experience that exists once, and never again. A few of these have been recorded, much like DJs record their sets, and are available to view on his site.

Mettler will be at Cinema Detroit for the 7:30 show on Saturday, January 11 only to introduce the film and answer questions afterwards. Tickets are $7.
