When The Guard opens Sgt. Gerry Boyle (Brendan Gleeson) spends more time breaking the law than enforcing it. We find out that Boyle grew up on American westerns, but after being stationed at a quiet post in the west of Ireland, he’s lost his passion for police work. However, things change when a dead body, a large shipment of drugs, and FBI agent Wendell Everett (played by the excellent Don Cheadle) show up on his beat. The Guard is part buddy-cop movie, and part homage to In the Heat of the Night, with Gleeson playing the part of the ignorant and racist rural sheriff, and Cheadle playing the sophisticated detective. While there are some serious and dramatic moments, The Guard is primarily a comedy that sets up a host of stereotypes only to knock them down in hilarious fashion. A nice bit of Irish comedy to get you ready for St. Patrick’s Day.
