Back in March, many of you enjoyed John Michael McDonagh’s The Guard. Now the writer/director has reunited with one of his leads in that film, Brendan Gleeson, for a new, rather different, film, Calvary. Gleeson plays Father James Lavelle, a good priest who is faced with troubling circumstances brought about by a mysterious member of his parish. This unseen person threatens to kill Father James in a week’s time. Although the priest continues to comfort his own fragile daughter (played by Kelly Reilly…Gleeson’s character became a priest after his wife died) and to help members of his church with their various problems, he feels a foreboding sinister force closing in, and begins to wonder if he will have the courage to face his own personal Calvary.

Also starring Chris O’Dowd, M. Emmet Walsh, and Marie-Josée Croze, Calvary is “an inventive whodunit with a pitch-black heart” (Indiewire).
