Thousands are submitted, only eight were chosen. Once again, Cinema Detroit is bringing you the best of the best from the Sundance Film Festival. For the first time ever, Sundance has created an Animation Shorts Program to tour only in theaters across the US, including a selection of animated shorts from the most recent Festival and some classics from past Festivals.
A rambunctious ride from some of the world’s most creative animators, the debut Sundance Film Festival Animated Shorts is 90 minutes of eight animated shorts from past editions of the January Festival. The 2014 program ranges in vivid style from handmade drawing and painting to puppetry, with stories of love, art, bubbles, nudism, the creation of the universe, and what it all means to you.
Ever since the Festival’s “Picture Independence: The Best of North American Animation” section in 1988, Sundance has celebrated animated shorts. The talented filmmakers shown over the years include: The Brothers Quay, Martha Colburn, Adam Elliott, Brent Green, Ray Harryhausen, Don Hertzfeldt, Emily Hubley, Chris Landreth, Carson Mell, David O’Reilly, Mark Osborne, Nick Park, PES, Mikey Please, Julia Pott, Corky Quakenbush, Bob Sabiston, Daniel Sousa, Jan Svankmajer and Pendleton Ward. The very first South Park short film by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS, showed at Sundance in 1997.
