During the 1960s and 1970s, the jazz pianist Joe Albany (John Hawkes) performed with the likes of Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and Charles Mingus. Sadly, at the height of his musical career, he fell prey to heroin addiction. Low Down tells the story of Albany’s life from the perspective of his daughter Amy (Elle Fanning), upon whose memoirs the film was based. The film also stars Glenn Close, Flea (of the Red Hot Chili Peppers), Lena Headey, and Peter Dinklage.

Low Down premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival where it won the Cinematography Award: U.S. Dramatic. Variety says the film’s first-time feature director Jeff Preiss, “certainly knows the music and the milieu.” If you have an interest in the music scene of the 1960s and 1970s, this biopic is for you.
