IT FOLLOWS held over

For 19-year-old Jay (Maika Monroe), Autumn should be about school, boys, and weekends at the lake. Yet after a seemingly innocent sexual encounter, she suddenly finds herself plagued by nightmarish visions. She can’t shake the sensation that someone, or something, is following her and intends to kill her. The only way to escape the menace is to pass it on to someone else. As the threat closes in, Jay and her friends must somehow avoid the horrors that are only a few steps behind.

This film was shot in Detroit, Clawson, Berkley, Sterling Heights, and up north. Director David Robert Mitchell embraces the horror trope of a Big Bad befalling sexually active teenagers and takes it somewhere unexpected, in a film that’s been compared to the early work of horror master John Carpenter. It Follows features a riveting central performance from Monroe and a strikingly ominous electronic score by Disasterpeace. As the only American film in last year’s Cannes Film Festival Critics’ Week sidebar, it premiered to audience and critical raves alike.

Mitchell’s feature debut The Myth of the American Sleepover premiered at the SXSW Film Festival in 2010, winning a Special Jury Prize, and was selected for the Critics’ Week section at Cannes, one of only seven feature films selected worldwide, and the only film from North America. It received rave reviews, and was listed as one of the top five films of the year on “Ebert Presents: At the Movies.”

“Mitchell reshapes tried-and-true scare conventions - teens in peril, a relentless malevolent force, jarring soundtrack - into an unexpectedly unique creepfest. And his riffs on sex and adulthood are refreshing in their allegorical complexity.” – Jeff Meyers, Metro Times

“Brilliant genre filmmaking, nicely sinister camera moves, excellent cast, superbly terrifying score by Disasterpeace.” – Boston Herald
