UPDATE: We are presenting two encore screenings of She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry: one on Saturday, April 25 at 7:30 p.m. and another on Sunday, April 26 at 3:00 p.m.
She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry resurrects the buried history of the outrageous, often brilliant, women who founded the modern women’s movement from 1966 to 1971. She’s Beautiful takes us from the founding of the National Organization for Women, with ladies in hats and gloves, to the emergence of more radical factions of women’s liberation; from intellectuals like Kate Millett to the street theatrics of Women’s International Conspiracy from Hell (WITCH).
Remarkably, there has never been a theatrical documentary about the early days of women’s liberation. She’s Beautiful aims not to romanticize the early movement, but to dramatize it in its exhilarating, quarrelsome, sometimes heart-wrenching glory.
The film does not shy away from controversies over race, sexual preference and leadership that arose in the women’s movement, and brilliantly captures the spirit of the time — thrilling, scandalous, and often hilarious.
She’s Beautiful director Mary Dore also co-produced the film and is the maker of the award-winning film The Good Fight-The Abraham Lincoln Brigade in the Spanish Civil War and NY Film Fest premiere Children of Labor.
Co-produced and edited by Nancy Kennedy, editor of Sundance Grand Jury Winner Why We Fight, For the Bible Tells Me So, and Orchestra of Exiles, among others.
“A feminist film masterpiece. Offers an inspiring account of the women’s liberation movement of the late 1960s.” – Kitty Lindsay, Ms. Magazine
“Reminds us feminists didn’t just feel as if they were changing the world — they changed it. Makes clear: the fight isn’t over.” – Rachel Saltz, New York Times
“Fascinating. Captures the excitement of that era, the growing sense of solidarity as more and more women discovered that their dissatisfaction was not an individual matter. Whatever mistakes have been made along the path and however the movement has been stereotyped, the essential project of feminism has always been the project of human freedom.” – Andrew O’Hehir, Salon.com – Pick of the Week
