First, we’d like to thank you - the movie fans who signed up for and visit our website every week. We truly appreciate your dedication not only to Cinema Detroit, but also to building Detroit’s film culture.

Cinema Detroit is one of only two 7-day-a-week first-run movie theaters in the City proper, and is the ONLY one showing arthouse fare all week. Over the past two years, we have screened many films exclusive to Detroit, to Michigan, and even to the Midwest, plus offering Hollywood’s more arthouse-friendly productions, right in Midtown. You could stay in town and come to Cinema Detroit to see these films - you didn’t have to travel to New York, L.A., Chicago, or Toronto. And if you live in the City proper, it’s been even more convenient to catch the latest arthouse and truly independent movies on the big screen.

We’d like to continue to be your Midtown/Downtown Detroit source for first-run, quality film. As you know, we’ve just moved into our new home on Third Street, a more visible and accessible location. This move means we need new projection equipment, so we can continue to show you the the films you want to see.

Ninety-five percent of our features are presented digitally. The major movie studios (and some minor ones too) have a security encryption in place on digital files they send us to project at our theater. In order for us to keep delivering these movies, we need equipment that can decrypt this encoding. This “DCI-compliant” equipment represents a fairly high investment for a small operation, but with your help, we can manage the necessary upgrade and keep going.
